BSO Chamber Music Series 2026 #1 – Bendigo, VIC – 29 March 2026

BSO Concertmaster Lizzy Welsh joins cellist Luke Severn and pianist Elyane Laussade for a program centred on two cornerstone works of the chamber repertoire.

Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24 “Spring” opens the afternoon. Written in 1801, the sonata expands on Beethoven’s more conversational style, with the opening Allegro unfolding in long lyrical lines shared between both players. The Adagio molto espressivo forms the emotional centre of the work, followed by a brief Scherzo and a buoyant final Rondo.

Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49 closes the program. Premiered in 1839 and championed by Schumann, the trio combines virtuosic piano writing with tightly woven string lines. Its light-footed Scherzo contrasts with the expansive first movement and driving finale.

Welsh, Severn and Laussade have collaborated regularly in BSO performances across many recent seasons. This recital places them together in the intimate setting of the piano trio and gives BSO audiences a chance to hear more of their collaborative nature as artists and musicians.
